RADAR CHECK: Overall, as expected, a rather quiet weather day for Alabama. The radar is pretty much free of any echoes, but we do see some strong storms over the western half of Mississippi. Temperatures remain below average… Birmingham reports only 86 degrees at 3:00. MOS (model output statistics) products from computer models remain way too hot… they don’t have a good grasp on the “cool” summer we are having.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: We will need to mention a chance of showers and storms tonight, especially over the western counties of the state, as the storms over Mississippi, Arkansas, and West Tennessee are moving east/southeast. And, tomorrow looks wet at times with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms. It won’t rain all day, but the rain could come at any hour of the day. We expect more clouds than sun, and once again the high should be in the mid to upper 80s.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Pretty much the same story; scattered showers and thunderstorms all three days with some sunshine at times. Highs between 87 and 90 in the moist air over Alabama.

OUR WEEKEND: Again, the overall pattern remains unchanged, so we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with the continued risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs between 87 and 90. Unfortunately, no way we can give you specific start/stop times of the rain, or specific locations. Just remember summer storms tend to be random, and scattered in nature.

THE GFS tries to bring drier air down into Northeast Alabama early next week, but that rarely happens here in August. We will keep the chance of scattered showers and storms going in the forecast.

GULF COAST WEATHER: We should mention this note posted today from the Orange Beach Fire Department…

“In addition to flying Yellow Flags, we are now flying PURPLE FLAGS for dangerous marine life. South Baldwin Urgent Care has reported seeing many patients who have suffered from Jellyfish Stings from the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores beaches.”

Otherwise, the weather looks pretty good for the rest of the week, with about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with the usual risk of scattered thunderstorms.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin for now. Lots of dry air, much of it coming from the deserts of Africa.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tonight at 8:30 p.m. CT… you can watch it live on “James Spann 24/7” on cable systems around the state, or on the web here.
