DOG DAY AFTERNOON: Pretty typical mix of sun and storms across Alabama this afternoon. Heavier storms at 3:15 were over Jackson County, east of Scottsboro, and over Cherokee County south of Weiss Lake. Showers and storms are moving slowly to the northeast; some flooding was reported earlier today around Florence. Away from the showers and storms, temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 80s. Showers and thunderstorms will die down late tonight.

TOMORROW: Not much change. Mixed sun and clouds; scattered showers and thunderstorms by afternoon, and a high in the upper 80s. Chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow is about one in three.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: We will trend drier on these three days. Understand the chance of rain is not zero, but afternoon storms should be widely spaced, and many places will be rain-free for a change. Afternoon highs will be pretty close to 90 degrees, so it will feel like August, unlike last weekend when we didn’t get out of the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues to suggest the first half of the week will be relatively dry for the northern half of Alabama, with a good supply of sunshine each day and only isolated showers. Highs will be in the 88-91 degree range.

TROPICS: Pretty much the same story; all is quiet across the Atlantic basin for now, and tropical storm formation is not expected through Friday.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
