The weather is gradually turning more toward typical August weather with temperatures mainly in the range of seasonal values – highs in the 89 to 92 range. Isolated showers are expected again today, but they are expected to be even less for the first part of the next week as slightly drier air comes into the region.

A weak surface front was analyzed across Central Alabama this morning, however, you have to look back north to Nashville before you see the drier air which is lagging the frontal position. Aloft, the upper ridge which has been situated to our west for much of the summer will gradually expand eastward over the weekend allowing slightly drier air to filter into Central Alabama. So it looks like Sunday to Wednesday will be primarily dry with highs 89 to 92.

The upper ridge shifts slightly westward Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This should allow another weak front to slight into the picture by the end of the week, Thursday-Friday time frame. While the weak front may provide some focus for showers, showers are still likely to be scattered at best though moisture values will come up again.

Beach goers can expect to see passing showers once again today, however, weather is improving as the easterly wave moves westward toward Texas and away from Southwest Alabama. Showers become more scattered on Sunday. Highs with some spotty sun both days should be in the mid 80s. Sea water temperature running around 85.

The outlook for organized severe weather according to SPC is in the North Central US for today, Day 1, and there are no slight risk areas for Day 2. And NHC is watching two areas, one in the North Central Gulf which is moving westward and a second area moving across the Yucatan Peninsula. Neither of these areas appears likely to see any development.

Now for the long range speculation! The GFS is advertising a BIG pattern change around the 4th of September. The upper air pattern carves out a serious trough through the Upper Mississippi River Valley which could herald the first significant cold front, not one of these wimps we’ve been seeing this summer, a sure indicator that Fall is not too far away. That is, of course, if the GFS has it right! And we are in voodoo country. But by September 8th, the GFS has another surprise for speculation with a upper low right over Tampa, FL. A tropical system? Possibly. Again, we are in voodoo country.
