HOT, HUMID LABOR DAY WEEKEND: It is finally starting to feel like summer, right as we are about to begin meteorological fall Sunday. Yesterday’s high in Birmingham was 91 degrees, two degrees above average. We project low 90s again today with a partly sunny sky. Low level moisture levels are high with dewpoints up in the 70s, so a few widely scattered showers or storms could form this afternoon. Chance of any one spot getting wet today is only about one in five.

For tomorrow, Sunday, and Labor Day, expect a mix of sun and clouds each day with the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Chance of any one spot getting wet each afternoon will be about one in three, with the higher coverage over the eastern two-thirds of the state. We stay hot and sticky with highs at or just over 90 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: A nice shot of cooler, drier continental air will move into North Alabama Tuesday; scattered showers and storms Tuesday afternoon should be mainly south of I-20, or south of a line from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston. Then, all of Alabama will be in the refreshing air Wednesday. Lows will drop down into the 50s by early Wednesday morning, and highs should be only in the low 80s with low humidity levels. The GFS MOS products look pretty clueless.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: We project about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day through Monday with a few “hit and miss” scattered thunderstorms. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s just a few miles inland. Sea water temperatures are in the low to mid 80s from Panama City to Gulf Shores.

TROPICS: The wave coming off the coast of Africa has a high chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next few days, but it is a higher latitude system, and most likely will recurve over the open Atlantic and won’t be a threat to land. A wave over the Central Atlantic still looks disorganized with little convection.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tonight the chance of any one stadium seeing a brief shower or storm is in the 20/30 percent range; otherwise mostly fair with upper 80s at kickoff, with temperatures falling through the 80s during the games, reaching the upper 70s by the final whistle.

COLLEGE GAMES: Auburn will host Washington State tomorrow evening (6:00 p.m. kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium; a brief shower or storm is possible during the first half… chance of a shower at the stadium is 30 percent. Otherwise, mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 88 degrees, then dropping through the 80s during the game. The weather down at Troy will be almost identical for the UAB/Troy game; the kickoff temperature down in Pike County will be close to 90. Alabama won’t have to worry about weather since they play Virginia Tech in the Georgia Dome, but for fans headed over for the game, tomorrow in Atlanta will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high around 90 degrees, and a few pop-up afternoon showers or storms are possible.
