The overall weather pattern for Central Alabama has become summer-ish once again with moisture back up along with the temperature. Much like we saw yesterday, Storms will be scattered again today and Sunday with the afternoon highs expected to be in the lower 90s, some of the warmest we’ve seen all summer. An isolated storm could become marginally severe with damaging wind the biggest threat.

For those headed to football games today, Auburn will host Washington State (6:00 p.m. kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium; a shower or storm is possible during the game with chances at the stadium around 40 percent. Otherwise, mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 87 degrees, then dropping through the 80s during the game. The weather at Troy will be almost identical for the UAB/Troy game; the kickoff temperature in Pike County will be close to 90. Alabama won’t have to worry about weather since they play Virginia Tech in the Georgia Dome, but for fans headed over for the game, tomorrow in Atlanta will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high around 90 degrees, and a few pop-up afternoon showers or storms are possible.

Alabama stays on the eastern periphery of the upper ridge to our west into the first of the week keeping us in a pattern of scattered showers driven mainly by the heat of the day. The trough over the eastern US becomes more pronounced which will lead to some drier and slightly cooler air for us by Tuesday and Wednesday. The upper trough lingers into the end of the week with moisture pushed to the south, so we should see mainly dry weather until moisture again increases Friday and Saturday. But it appears that shower chances will be small.

Tropics are being watched for two areas, however, while some development is possible, neither of the two areas appears likely to become a tropical storm during the next couple of days.

You’ve got to like the look of the pattern around September 12th as the GFS suggests a strong trough moving through the eastern US. This is the kind of pattern which would suggest a substantial cold front with a nice hint to Fall. Unfortunately, the pattern reverts by the end of Week 2 to a broad ridge across the eastern two-thirds of the country.
