Uneventful Weather Pattern Continues

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

CALM DAYS IN THE WEATHER OFFICE: This has indeed been a very “quiet” year for weather in the U.S… the lowest tornado count in 60 years, no hurricanes, and a “cool” summer for much of the Deep South. The calm weather continues today; the sky will be partly sunny with only a small risk of any one spot seeing a shower this afternoon. Today’s high will be at or just over 90 degrees.

REST OF THE WEEK: Each day the chance of rain is not zero, but don’t hold your breath waiting for a shower. Anything that forms should be widely spaced; days will be partly sunny and highs mostly fair; highs will remain in the 88-92 degree range, just a little above average for mid-September in Alabama. A cold front will pass through the state Thursday night or Friday, but with limited moisture and dynamic support, we don’t expect anything more than a few widely scattered showers.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks great with ample sunshine and lower humidity; the high will drop into the mid 80s as we get into the edge of a cool airmass centered well north of Alabama. Then, on Sunday, moisture levels will rise and a few widely spaced showers could form with a mix of sun and clouds. The high Sunday will stay in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Humberto formed last night in the far East Atlantic; it is expected to become a hurricane by mid-week, but it will turn north soon and will be closer to Europe than the U.S. If Humberto is upgraded to a hurricane Wednesday (September 11), it will tie the modern record for the latest first hurricane of the season. Elsewhere… the remnant thunderstorm mass of Gabrielle is east of the Bahamas; if by chance it gets it’s act together again, it should move northeast over the open Atlantic and is no threat to the U.S. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine along the coast this week with only widely scattered showers or storms; highs will be in the mid to upper 80s along the immediate coast, with low 90s just a few miles inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 87 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tonight at 8:30p CT… Greg Carbin of the Storm Prediction Center is our guest. He will be in Birmingham speaking to the local chapter of the National Weather Association… the show will be done right after the meeting, which will be held at the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Riverchase, next door to ABC 33/40. You can watch the show live on “James Spann 24/7” on cable systems around Alabama, or on the web here.
