RADAR CHECK: At daybreak we have showers on radar over East Alabama… it is raining around Anniston and Jacksonville as I write this; other showers are from near Sylacauga to Mellow Valley. Showers are moving pretty quickly to the northeast.

As the day progresses, expect showers and thunderstorms to increase statewide. We still project the best risk of widespread rain from about 10:00 this morning to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, and rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely over the northern and central counties of Alabama. A good chance we won’t get out of the 70s today because of clouds and rain.

STRONG STORMS: SPC maintains a 5 percent risk of severe weather over much of Mississippi, West Tennessee, and West Alabama later today and early tonight thanks to a vigorous, negative tilt upper trough moving in here from the Great Plains. Surface based CAPE (instability) values are expected to rise above 1,200 j/kg over the northern half of Alabama this afternoon, so no doubt a strong storm or two is very possible. Hail will be the main threat, as the low level wind fields remain pretty weak.

TOMORROW: Lingering showers will end during the morning, and we should begin to see a few patches of blue sky during the afternoon hours as drier air works in. Temperatures will rise to near 80 degrees.

THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: These four days look very nice, with mostly sunny days and fair pleasant nights. Afternoon highs will be generally in the 80-84 degree range, with early morning lows down around 60 degrees, with 50s for the cooler valleys. No threat of rain for high school football games Thursday and Friday night, and no wet weather worries for college games Saturday. Very pleasant early autumn weather.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring some risk of a shower or two after midnight Sunday night into Monday, but the GFS isn’t very bullish on the event with only light, spotty rain.

VOODOO LAND: The 00Z GFS develops a huge upper low over Missouri around October 6 that might bring a decent storm event to Alabama, but voodoo land features like that tend to fade away on the next operational run. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps and graphics.

TROPICS: Amazingly quiet for September 24. Nothing of interest, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the rest of the week.

AT THE BEACH: Rain and storms are likely today, but look for mostly sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through the weekend. Highs today will be in the upper 70s, then back in the 80s for the rest of the week. Sea water temperatures from Panama City over to Gulf Shores are mostly in the low 80s.
