CLOUDY MONDAY: We begin this last day of September with rain over parts of West Alabama; moderate rain was falling at daybreak over much of Lamar, and parts of Fayette Counties, with scattered light rain elsewhere west of I-65. The eastern half of the state is dry, and the sky is generally cloudy; temperatures in the 60s.

The rain over West Alabama is moving east, but the air over East Alabama is drier, and some of the rain will just dissipate as it heads in that direction. But, we will mention some risk of scattered rain for all of the state this morning with a mostly cloudy sky. Temperatures won’t get out of the 70s, and by this afternoon the bulk of the rain should be east and south of here.

REST OF THE WEEK: We begin the month of October with a dry day tomorrow; a partly sunny sky along with a high in the low 80s. We should remain rain-free Wednesday through Friday; highs will be in the low to mid 80s with lows in the 60s. Days will be partially sunny; nights mostly fair.

RAIN AT TIMES THIS WEEKEND: A deep surface low will move from the Great Plains up to the Great Lakes late this week and over the weekend, and will drag a cold front through our state, meaning some risk of occasional rain for the weekend. The 00Z GFS hints the main window for showers will come from about 3:00 p.m. Saturday through 3:00 p.m. Sunday; we will be able to be more specific later in the week as the event gets closer. While a little thunder can’t be ruled out, we don’t expect any severe weather, and it looks like rain amounts of around 1/2 inch will be possible for most communities Saturday and Sunday.

Drier air moves back into Alabama early next week. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression 11 formed this weekend in the middle of the Atlantic; it could become Tropical Storm Jerry in coming days, but it will wander around the open Atlantic and should remain far from land. A wave in the Caribbean is being watched; this one, most likely, will move across the Yucatan and into the Bay of Campeche this week. If something does form there, odds are high it moves into Mexico, south of Brownsville, Texas, like other systems this season.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely on the coast today from Panama City over to Gulf Shores, but the showers will become more scattered in nature tomorrow and on through the rest of the week, with about 3-5 hours of sunshine daily. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 81 degrees.
