Dry For The Rest Of The Week

RAIN IS OVER: A check of the radar at mid-afternoon showers that the rain has ended over the northern half of the state, and it sure looks like most of Alabama will be dry through Friday. We project partly sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through Friday; highs will be in the low to mid 80s, with morning lows down in the 60s. Showers will remain west of Alabama in a moisture axis near the Mississippi River.

WEEKEND SHOWERS: There is a high probability our next chance of rain will come this weekend; the timing is the big issue. The 12Z run of the GFS is a little slower with the rain, and it hints that we might make it through a pretty good part of the day Saturday before showers arrive. That run hints our main window for rain will come from about 5:00 p.m. Saturday through 5:00 p.m. Sunday; rain amounts of about one-half inch are likely. Some thunder is possible, but no severe weather is expected.

The one possible “fly in the ointment” is a tropical system that should be over the Southwest Gulf of Mexico later this week. The upper trough supporting a cold front moving through Alabama this weekend could set up a north motion for the tropical system, perhaps bringing a heavy rain threat to our state. But, models do not show this scenario, and it more likely the tropical system goes into Mexico, south of Brownsville, Texas.

NEXT WEEK: Cooler, drier air blows into Alabama early in the week, and there is some hint we could see lows in the 40s here by early Tuesday morning. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Jerry is now on the board over the Central Atlantic; it will basically loop around this week and will remain far from land. The disturbance in the Caribbean could show some development late this week; it will move across the Yucatan Peninsula, and will come out over the Bay of Campeche by Thursday or Friday. As discussed above, the most likely track for this will take it into Mexico, but that is certainly not carved in stone. We will keep an eye on it.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Look for a mix of sun and clouds each day through Friday on the Gulf Coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores, with about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day. Scattered showers and storms are possible, and highs will hold in the 80s. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the low 80s.
