TOO COLD FOR OCTOBER: The NWS in Huntsville has issued a freeze warning for late tonight and early tomorrow for Colbert, Jackson, Lauderdale, Limestone, and Madison Counties up across far North Alabama, with a frost advisory for the counties across the southern part of the Tennessee Valley. This is due to a new surge of colder air blowing in here tonight; we project a low between 30 and 37 degrees at daybreak tomorrow for North/Central Alabama with a clear sky. Not sure the wind goes totally calm, but no doubt protected areas will have some frost once again.

Tomorrow will be a sunny but cool day with a high only in the mid to upper 50s.

SATURDAY MORNING FREEZE POTENTIAL: We are still projecting lows in the 27 to 35 degree range early Saturday morning, and many communities around here will have their first freeze of the season. Then, we warm into the low 60s Saturday with a good supply of sunshine. The high Sunday will be in the upper 60s as a warming trend begins.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cold weather for the high school football games tonight and tomorrow night; temperatures will fall into the 40s during the games, and some stadiums could be in the upper 30s by the final whistle tomorrow night. A good, warm jacket will be in order.

For Saturday’s Magic City Classic (Alabama State vs Alabama A&M) at Birmingham’s Legion Field (2:30p CT kickoff), the sky will be sunny with a temperature near 61 at kickoff, then falling into the 50s during the second half. Alabama hosts Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… 62 degrees as the game begins with 50s during the second half.

Auburn will host Florida Atlantic Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium… the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 58 degrees, falling into the 40s by the final whistle. UAB will play indoors Saturday; they are in the Alamodome to take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (4:30p CT kickoff). For fans traveling to San Antonio, the day will be mostly cloudy with a chance of widely scattered showers. The high Saturday afternoon will be in the mid to upper 70s.

NEXT WEEK: No doubt a significant storm system will impact Alabama over the latter half of next week, but for now it is just too early to resolve the details. The 12Z GFS develops a deepening surface low that moves from Shreveport to Paducah Wednesday night, with a band of strong to severe thunderstorms moving through Alabama Wednesday night. But, the ECMWF is much slower, and shows the band of storms arriving late Thursday night and Friday morning of next week. Also, the Euro has the surface low more to the north, over the Great Lakes.

But both models clearly show a setup for potentially severe thunderstorms across Alabama at some point late next week, right as the fall tornado season begins. We will watch it closely in coming days; be sure and watch the Weather Xtreme video for a look at the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: Lorenzo has dissipated, and the Atlantic basin now is very quiet.
