The sky today will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the low to mid 60s.

EVEN COLDER: The next surge of cold air moves in here late tonight and tomorrow. We begin the day tomorrow with temperatures generally between 32 and 37, and despite sunshine in full supply tomorrow we won’t get past the mid 50s.

SATURDAY MORNING FREEZE: We project lows early Saturday morning in the 27-35 degree range, and many communities will experience their first freeze of the season.

The weekend will stay dry; the high Saturday will be in the low 60s, followed by mid 60s Sunday. Moisture levels will rise a bit Sunday, but for now we won’t mention any risk of showers with a pretty dry airmass and the lack of any serious forcing.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cold weather for the high school football games tonight and tomorrow night; temperatures will fall into the 40s during the games, and some stadiums could be in the upper 30s by the final whistle tomorrow night. A good, warm jacket will be in order.

For Saturday’s Magic City Classic (Alabama State vs Alabama A&M) at Birmingham’s Legion Field (2:30p CT kickoff), the sky will be sunny with a temperature near 61 at kickoff, then falling into the 50s during the second half. Alabama hosts Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… 62 degrees as the game begins with 50s during the second half.

Auburn will host Florida Atlantic Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium… the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 58 degrees, falling into the 40s by the final whistle. UAB will play indoors Saturday; they are in the Alamodome to take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (4:30p CT kickoff). For fans traveling to San Antonio, the day will be mostly cloudy with a chance of widely scattered showers. The high Saturday afternoon will be in the mid to upper 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Still seeing conflicting model output for the system around Halloween. The 00Z GFS shunts the main energy far north of Alabama, with just a trailing cold front and a narrow band of showers and storms moving through here on Thursday with little risk of severe weather. The 00Z ECMWF is slower, but with a similar idea. The main energy passes well north of our state at the end of the week with a band of showers and storms moving through here on Friday. Of course, we are still a long way away from the event and uncertainty remains. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: Lorenzo, in the Central Atlantic, has been downgraded to a tropical depression and is in the process of dissipating. The rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Mostly sunny days and fair cool nights through early next week; highs mostly in the 70s and lows in the 50s from Panama City over to Gulf Shores. Some spots, however, could reach the 40s on the coast early Saturday morning.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
