Mid-Morning Update

| October 31, 2013 @ 10:19 am

Storm system off to our west is continuing to move east today and we are seeing the rain and storms move east with it. Most areas across Alabama remain dry right now, but the rain is knocking on the door coming from Mississippi. Heavy rain is falling across much of central Mississippi currently and the NWS Office in Jackson has many of their counties under a flash flood watch through midnight.

Across Central Alabama, none of our counties are currently under any advisory. The SPC has much of northwest Alabama under their standard “slight risk” category for the threat of severe weather. On the image below, we can see the risk area outlined in green as it includes areas north and west of a line from northern Choctaw County in SW Alabama, up to Demopolis, north to Birmingport, Hanceville and just east of Huntsville. This risk is valid until tomorrow morning as some strong storms are expected in Alabama later today. The main concern with any storms that reach severe limits will be damaging straight line winds. By the time the worst of the storms reach Alabama this evening, they are expected to be weakening. The best dynamics for severe weather weather remain northwest of Alabama today. Very heavy rain has been falling with this system and it looks like as the severe weather risk decreases, the threat for flash flooding could be increasing.

Severe weather is ongoing across portions of Louisiana this morning and a tornado watch is in effect the area. The rain shield is moving a little faster and should begin to enter Alabama over the next few hours and many areas could see rain during the afternoon hours. It is a wet forecast for trick-or-treating along and north of Interstate 59 this evening. The rain should impact areas to the southeast of the Birmingham Metro later on in the evening and into the overnight hours.
