THE WEDGE: The weather through tomorrow will all be determined by what part of Alabama you are in.
Sure looks like a CAD (cold air damming) pattern is setting up, making for a tricky mid-week forecast. If you are in East Alabama, the weather will be colder, and generally overcast through tomorrow with some risk of scattered light rain or drizzle tonight and tomorrow morning; we will insert that in the forecast. For places like Heflin, Wedowee, Anniston, and Roanoke, you probably won’t get out of the 50s tomorrow with a cool east wind.

However, over West Alabama, the weather will be brighter with a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow. The high there will be in the low 60s today, and mid 60s tomorrow.

FRIDAY: The wedge breaks down, and most communities will rise into the 68-71 degree range as we enjoy a mild November day. The sky will be mostly cloudy (although a few intervals of sunshine are certainly possible), and the daytime hours will be dry.

Showers in advance of as strong cold front will move into Alabama Friday night. For places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden it looks like the main window for rain will come from about 9:00 p.m. Friday through 12:00 noon Saturday. No severe weather, probably no thunder, and rain amounts should be light. Many locations will see under 1/4 inch.

ARCTIC SHOT FOR THE WEEKEND: As the rain moves out during the midday hours Saturday, much colder air moves in. Strong north winds will develop, out of the north averaging 15-25 mph during the afternoon hours. Temperatures should fall from the 50s Saturday morning, into the 40s Saturday afternoon, and the wind will make it feel colder. Bottom line is that it looks like a rather raw day.

We will be down in the mid 20s at daybreak Sunday, and the wind chill index will drop in the teens as the gusty north winds continue. Sunday will be sunny, but breezy and cold with a high only between 40 and 45 degrees. Our friends up in the Tennessee Valley most likely won’t get out of the 30s. It should be the coldest air we have seen so far this season.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB has a game tomorrow night at Legion Field against the Rice Owls, the game kicks off at 6:30 CT. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but we don’t expect any significant rain. Temperatures will be comfortable with a kickoff temperature near 58 degrees, falling into the mid 50s during the second half.

Showers are possible for Friday night’s high school football playoff games with a cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50s. But, the latest guidance hints the rain could hold off until after 9:00 for places like Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston/Gadsden. Higher chance of rain for the games will be north of Birmingham.

Saturday, Alabama hosts UT-Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny Stadium (1:00p CT kickoff); rain in Tuscaloosa Saturday morning should end by kickoff. The game will be played with windy and cold conditions; temperatures will fall from near 52 at kickoff into the mid 40s by the final whistle with a strong north wind averaging 12-25 mph.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: We begin the week with a very cold morning Monday; the low will be somewhere between 19 and 24 degrees for most places. Then, we warm to near 50 degrees Monday afternoon.

The latest GFS run (06Z) is much faster with our next rain-maker. A low in the western Gulf moves to a point just south of the Mississippi coast at midday Tuesday, and that scenario would bring a soaking rain to most of Alabama Tuesday and Tuesday night. No severe weather, just a good soaking, with rain amounts of one inch likely.

Then, the sky clears on Wednesday as more cold air drops into the state; we won’t get out of the 40s Wednesday afternoon. Thanksgiving morning will be cold with a low in the 20s; the day will be sunny and the afternoon high will be in the 50s.

“Black Friday” and “Iron Bowl Saturday” look rain-free for now with a slow warming trend. Be sure and check out the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and details.
