Nice Weekend for Central Alabama

We’re in for a nice weekend as we crossover from November into December. The afternoon highs for Central Alabama will approach the 60-degree mark, so we stay just a tad cooler than our 30-year averages suggest. But the pattern evolves somewhat as we go into next week which promises warmer weather but somewhat unsettled weather, too.

A weak short wave moves through the upper flow pattern on Monday which promises to bring a chance for showers to the area. However, the system is forecast to have little moisture to work with, so it is not expected to be a big rain producer. In fact, since it will be showers or patches of light rain, some folks may come away without any rain and those that do get rain are probably not going to get a lot, less than a quarter of an inch.

After the passage of that short wave Monday, the Southeast US goes into a ridge pattern with the main axis of the ridge along the East Coast. To our west, the GFS is carving out a fairly deep trough over the Four Corners area. Unfortunately, this puts us smack dap in the middle between the two systems. This means that another frontal zone will move into the area late Wednesday or Thursday and then stick around as the pattern changes little for several days.

Look for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to be wet ones across the Southeast US as the frontal boundary remains stalled across the area. Look for off and on rain and passing showers for those three days. The GFS is suggesting some wintery issues for the Southern Plains, too. But for us, with the southwesterly flow aloft we should warm up for the end of the week with highs in the 60s, above our seasonal values. In fact, we could push the 70-degree mark by Thursday. We’ll have good warm advection with that southwest flow aloft, however, we should have a lot of clouds as well as off-and-on rain.

The frontal boundary finally pushes through the Southeast as we edge out into the next week. But peeking into voodoo country, the GFS suggests the pattern remains very fast with a train of systems, but there appears to be an absence of any real amplitude to those systems. That means we stay somewhat mild for early December.
