Record Cold Possible
Much of the eastern half of the country is bracing for some of the coldest weather seen in the last twenty years. The lowest temperature for this morning was minus 36 at Big Black River, ME. Much of western and central Canada was below zero this afternoon with some spots reporting values as low as minus 33 in the warmest part of the afternoon.
So just what are the record lows for Central Alabama. Here’s a quick table showing the records for several days ahead and the year in which the record was set.
Station | Jan. 5 | Jan. 6 | Jan. 7 | Jan. 8 |
Anniston | 11, 1950 | 14, 1989 | 11, 1989 | 10, 1946 |
Birmingham | 9, 1955 | 4, 1989 | 11, 1989 | 7, 1946 |
Tuscaloosa | 12, 1950 | 13, 1989 | 13, 1989 | 12, 2006 |
Based on the latest forecast thinking, several of these records are likely to fall in the upcoming frigid event.
This dangerously cold event has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a hard freeze warning for Central Alabama from midnight Sunday night to noon on Tuesday, a wind advisory from 6 pm Sunday to 6 pm Monday, and a wind chill advisory from midnight Sunday to 6 pm Monday.
So you get the idea that it is really going to be cold. On top of that, it continues to appear likely that the cold air will arrive before the moisture has fully departed Central Alabama. So a dusting to half an inch of snow is probable along and north of a line from Tuscaloosa to Alexander City. About an inch of snow is possible along and north of the Tennessee River.
