Arctic Front and Air Mass Moving South

| January 4, 2014 @ 6:30 pm

Temperatures made their way into the 40s across much of Alabama today. Overnight, southerly flow and increasing clouds will allow our temps to remain just above the freezing mark. Enjoy this while you can, as bitterly cold Arctic air eyes Alabama for its next stop.

As we look off to our northwest, the Arctic front is showing up on the temperature map. Last night, the front plunged south out of Canada; today the front has continued its southeastward movement. The temperature gradient with the front shows up very well this evening. The front currently stretches southern Wisconsin, southwest towards Kansas City and then down through southeastern Kansas and into northern Oklahoma.

Behind the front, the temperatures are plummeting across the Midwest. Single digits and below zero temperatures are overspreading the Midwest and Plains. The front and the air mass are continuing to head south and will be moving our way. This record breaking cold will be arriving into Alabama Sunday evening. Once the temps fall below freezing tomorrow, they will not get above the freezing mark until Wednesday.
