Note For Cullman County

| January 5, 2014 @ 10:39 am

As has been the case for a number of years, I hear of those complaining that we “ignore Cullman County” because they are not under a watch, warning, advisory when Winston County (to the immediate west) and Blount County (to the immediate east) are under one.

Today, Cullman County is not under a winter weather advisory, while Winston and Blount Counties are. This is an effort to explain the situation.

*Cullman County is in the Birmingham TV market. That means us. You should be watching local stations from Birmingham, and we have always, and will always, provide long form coverage when there is a tornado warning.

*Cullman County is in the Huntsville National Weather Service County Warning Area (CWA). Warnings and advisories are issued by the National Weather Service in Huntsville. This has nothing to do with the TV market assignment; you should be watching local stations from Birmingham for weather coverage since you are in our market. We have excellent communication with the NWS in Huntsville and pass their warnings on to you.

*Both the Birmingham and Huntsville NWS offices do an excellent job. Two of the best offices in the nation.

*NWS offices in Huntsville and Birmingham have different criteria for winter weather advisories, thus the issue today. Cullman decided not to put Cullman County under a winter weather advisory, while the NWS in Birmingham has put one out for Winston and Blount.

This issue does create confusion, but I can’t do anything about it. I have voiced my concern with Cullman EMA and the NWS offices involved.

But, we do not ignore Cullman County. Never have, and never will. For tonight and the next few days, it really doesn’t matter where you live; we will all have some icy spots tonight on roads, and brutal cold for three days. Scroll down for the full details…
