ABOVE FREEZING: No worries about scraping frost off your windshield this morning. Temperatures are generally in the 40s across Alabama with a cloud cover in place. Not even close to freezing.

The sky will remain cloudy today, and while a few isolated showers are possible, the main rain event comes tonight into tomorrow morning as a sharp upper trough approaches Alabama from the west.

GOOD SOAKING: Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely across Alabama tonight into tomorrow morning; the NAM is printing 1.21″ for Birmingham. With good dynamic support, you will probably hear some thunder in the middle of the night, but there is no significant risk of severe weather with no real thermodynamics. The most widespread rain comes from about 10:00 tonight through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: The sky will begin to clear tomorrow afternoon as drier air works into the state. We will be in the 60s tomorrow morning, but temperatures should fall through the 50s tomorrow afternoon with a cool northwest wind of 10-20 mph.

Sunday looks like a delightful mid-winter day. The sky will be sunny… and after a low in the 30s we expect a high between 57 and 60 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will pass through Alabama Monday evening; moisture will be pretty limited, but it might squeeze out a shower or two. Then, the rest of the week will be dry but cool. Highs will drop into the 40s Wednesday, and by early Thursday lows will be in the 20s. Another shot of colder air arrives at the end of the week on Friday with highs going back down in the 40s.

LAND OF VOODOO: Still looking at a positive AO (Arctic Oscillation) over the last 10 days of January, which should keep the really cold air bottled up well to the north, leaving us in a rather tranquil, benign pattern with seasonal temperatures. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
