RADAR CHECK: It is a cloudy and cool day across the great state of Alabama; nothing showing up on radar around here, although we had drizzle in many places earlier. Temperatures are generally in the low to mid 50s, right at seasonal averages for mid-January.

WET WEATHER AHEAD: We still expect a good soaking for Alabama late tonight into tomorrow morning as a deep upper trough advances eastward from the Great Plains. Latest model data suggests the most widespread rain comes from about midnight tonight through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. Rain amounts of at least one inch are likely; some spots could see more.

Don’t be surprised if you hear some thunder early tomorrow morning, but severe weather won’t be a problem.

The sky begins to clear tomorrow afternoon as drier air rolls into the state. We most likely begin the day in the 60s, but fall back into the 50s tomorrow afternoon with a cool northwest breeze.

SUNNY SUNDAY: No doubt Sunday will be the nicest day over the weekend. Sunshine in full supply; we begin the day in the mid 30s, but will rise close to 60 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring clouds, and the threat of showers to Alabama Monday. Not a big rain event with limited moisture… then drier air returns Tuesday with a mostly sunny sky. Looks like we have two cold shots next week… one Wednesday, and another on Friday. On those two days highs will drop into the 40s. But, after Monday, the rest of the week should be rain-free.

LONG RANGE: Still looks like a quiet period with average temperatures in the January 20-25 time frame, then evidence another cold shot might make a run at the Deep South as the month ends. No sign of any winter weather mischief, however. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
