An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

NEW SURGE OF COLDER AIR ARRIVES: We stay cool and dry today; the high will be in the mid 40s with a brisk west wind of 12-22 mph. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny; any snow flurries should be confined to the far northern counties of the state near the Tennessee border.

Tonight will be very cold; we project a low between 17 and 24 degrees early tomorrow morning as the weekend begins.

OUR WEEKEND: Expect sun filled days with a slow warming trend. We rise into the upper 40s tomorrow, and low 50s Sunday. The air stays very dry.

NEXT WEEK: Monday should be the warmest day out of the next seven; the GFS is printing a high of 62 for Birmingham with a partly sunny sky. But, another surge of colder air blows in here Tuesday. The last few runs of the GFS are trending colder; in fact it looks like we might have a hard time getting out of the 30s Wednesday, with lows in the 17-24 degree range again by Wednesday and Thursday morning.

The week looks mostly dry with only a slight risk of a few sprinkles Monday night ahead of the cold air surge.

LONG RANGE: The GFS continues to hint at some winter weather mischief here around January 26, but that event is still 9 days away and there is no way to resolve details, or even know if it will happen. But, there has been some good model consistency in the idea and something to watch. Also, we have seen signs of a pretty significant surge of cold air down into the eastern half of the nation in the January 25-30 time frame with a potential cross polar flow. Again, no way to be specific now, but we will keep an eye on the trends. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
