GFS Data

| February 9, 2014 @ 11:09 am

A quick couple of notes on the new GFS data:

…Shows the 32F surface temperature lined up ominously along the I-59 corridor with fairly significant precipitation (0.10-0.25) inches through the corridor and even higher amounts spreading in from the southwest.

…This reinforces the theme of a significant icing threat along and either side of I-59 Tuesday morning.

…The GFS is COLDER Tuesday morning, with temperatures hovering near freezing at BHM. It then shows a decent amount of snow (2-3 inches) accumulating along I-20 north to US-278.

This is snow accumulation through noon Tuesday from the GFS:

2-9-2014 11-07-37 AM

Here is the forecast sounding for Noon Tuesday from the GFS for BHM:

2014-02-09_11-04-31

It shows temperatures very close to freezing under about 7500 feet, with a cold layer just above the surface. That would seem to indicate a sleet/snow mix with surface temps just above freezing.

…For folks in Marion, Winston, Cullman, Blount, Lamar, Fayette and Walker, this may be the area where the best precipitation and temperature profiles for snow occur. There would be a band of an icy mix from Sumter and Greene counties up through pIckens, Tuscaloosa and Jefferson Counties into Shelby, St. Clair, Etowah, Talladega, Calhoun, Cleburne and Clay Counties.

This is an evolving winter weather situation. Winter Storm Watches go into effect Monday night for Blount, Cherokee, Etowah, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker and Winston Counties as well as Calhoun, Cleburne, Jefferson, Pickens, St. Clair and Tuscaloosa til noon Tuesday.

We will be continually updating forecasts as we get new model data throughout the next 48-72 hours. Stay tuned to AlabamaWX for frequent updates.
