The Waiting Game

| February 10, 2014 @ 5:34 pm

We are still a few hours out from the onset of quite the winter weather event across Central Alabama and the Southeast.

More moisture continues to stream in and we are seeing evidence of this as showers have gone from isolated to scattered to now numerous. Light to moderate rain is coming down across many areas of the state. For the next few hours, we expect to only see rain in the area. Temps remain above freezing and no travel issues are expected this evening.

As we look to the west, we are beginning to see some rain showers transition over to frozen precip in the Mississippi Delta. Expect many areas to the west to slowly transition over to the frozen precip and that activity will be moving east overnight.

As we head through the next few hours, our temperatures will be falling and the shower coverage will increase. Around the 8-9PM time frame, we expect to see the rain begin to transition over to frozen precip in our western counties. Once it transitions over, do not expect it to switch back until later during the day on Tuesday.

A reminder, the Winter Storm Warning begins at 9PM this evening and last until at least midnight Wednesday. The Winter Weather Advisory that is issued along the southern edge of the warning area has the same times.

We will have new model data come in the next few hours and will be working on our forecast as well as updates.

Most importantly numerous schools and business have either closed Tuesday or have delayed start times. Travel will be affected in the morning and we expect many areas to have some slick spots. Once again, make no plans to be out on the roads in the morning in the affected areas.

Also, plan ahead for a secondary winter weather event Tuesday night into Wednesday. Let us get through this first system and we will turn our thoughts and forecast the second system tomorrow.
