Warmer, Calmer Days Ahead

BLUE SKY RETURNS: We will try and compile a good list of snow totals across Alabama later today (actually, there is a pretty good list if you scroll down to some of the posts here from last night). Heaviest total I see so far is 10 inches at Boaz, in Marshall County. Seems like the bullseye was over Cullman/Marshall/Blount/DeKalb counties. Parts of the Birmingham metro had 5-6 inches. Snow intensity was incredible for a while last night.

Today will be mostly sunny as the lingering clouds over East Alabama go away; the high will be in the upper 40s as the snow melts away.

CLOUDS RETURN TOMORROW: A clipper type system will bring a cold front down into Alabama tomorrow night. Clouds will increase in advance of this feature, and a band of showers will pass through tomorrow evening. Seems like the best chance of rain will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and rain amounts of around 1/4 inch are likely. Nothing really heavy, and the rain won’t last too long. We warm up nicely tomorrow despite the clouds with a high in the upper 50s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Lots of sunshine Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be a little cooler with a high around 50 degrees, but warm into the low 60s Sunday as a pronounced warming trend begins.

SPRING PREVIEW NEXT WEEK: The GFS is projecting highs between 65 and 69 degrees Monday and Tuesday, with low 70s in here on Wednesday and Thursday as the upper air pattern changes across North America. I bet spring fever will break out. Weak fronts will bring some risk of showers Monday night, and then again Thursday night, but the rain won’t be heavy and totals will be light. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

STORM ALERT 2014: We are going to postpone tonight’s scheduled Storm Alert 2014 stop at Calera High School; we will let you know when it is rescheduled.

VOODOO LAND: The GFS hints at a storm system around February 23 with rain and thunderstorms, with some potential for a brief change to snow on the back side of the departing system. But no sign of any long lasting “cold waves” through early March.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
