WARMER TODAY: Some of the colder pockets are below freezing this morning; seeing a few upper 20s over Northeast Alabama at daybreak. But, we warm nicely today, and most communities will rise into the mid to upper 60s this afternoon with a partly sunny sky. Clouds increase tonight ahead of a short wave over Texas.

WEEKEND RAIN SITUATION: While a shower or two is certainly possible in scattered spots tomorrow, it looks like a majority of the day will be dry and mild. The sky will be mostly cloudy and the high will be in the 69-72 degree range.

The most widespread rain should come from about midnight tomorrow night through 12:00 noon Sunday as the upper trough and a surface low arrive. Some thunder is certainly possible, if not likely, but severe weather parameters remain less than impressive. There will be a small amount of surface based instability, but the higher shear values are to the east, and wind fields are not especially strong.

SPC does have a “slight risk” of severe weather up tomorrow for parts of Central and East Texas, but there is no formal risk on Sunday. Just low end 5 percent severe weather probabilities for Southwest Alabama.

Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely with this event; the rain should diminish Sunday afternoon as a surface low moves northeast of Alabama. The GFS is hinting we reach the low 70s Sunday.

MONDAY: The 00Z GFS brings a secondary surface through, but south of here over the Florida panhandle. If this solution is correct, Monday will be cloudy and cooler with potential for some rain, especially from I-20 south. Much of North Alabama could remain in the cool 50s through the day.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: Tuesday will be dry with a high in the mid to upper 60s. A cold front will pass through the state early Wednesday, but moisture will be very limited, and most places won’t see any rain (a few showers are possible along the front mainly over the Tennessee Valley). Thursday will be a little cooler with a high in the low 60s; Thursday and Friday will be rain-free.

VOODOO LAND: The 00Z GFS hints at a setup for strong storms around March 25… see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
