Midday Outlook

| March 15, 2014 @ 12:33 pm

It is a cloudy and gray today across Alabama and much of the Southeast. There are a few peeks of sunshine, but for the most part we all remain socked in with clouds. The weather isn’t that bad today, though it is cloudy, temperatures are mild as most locations across the state are in the 60s early this afternoon. Most everyone will see upper 60s, with even a few 70s likely to show up on the maps later this afternoon.

As we look at the latest satellite image, we can see our next storm system over Texas, which will be moving east today. That means our clouds persist and actually thicken during the afternoon and evening hours as rain and thunderstorms will arrive later.

Looking at what is going on underneath those clouds, we see there are a few isolated showers to our west, and there is certainly a chance for some widely isolated showers across Alabama today, but the main rain event will hold off to the overnight hours. As we look towards Texas, we are beginning to see showers and a few thunderstorms developing. The SPC has much of northeastern Texas, Louisiana, and areas along the Mississippi Gulf Coast outlined in a slight risk for severe weather today. The areas outlined in green could see large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes today as a cold front will be pushing east. The storms will continue to develop over Texas the next few hours, and will move east this evening and into the overnight hours.

For us in Alabama, severe weather is not expected. We will see showers and storms become more widespread to our west this afternoon and that activity will move into the state overnight. We expect a soaking rain overnight and into Sunday. Little wind shear and very low instability will keep the threat of sever weather for Central Alabama very minimal with this storm system.
