SUMMER PREVIEW: Birmingham’s official high yesterday was 87 degrees… the warmest so far this year, and 4 degrees off the record high of 92, set in 1902.

We begin this Monday with temperatures mostly in the cool 50s, but the dry air will heat quickly with a strong May sun, and we rise into the upper 80s this afternoon. This is well above the average high of 78, but short of the record for May 5 of 92, also set in 1902.

Alabama’s weather will remain very warm and dry through Thursday with highs in the mid to upper 80s each afternoon.

TO THE WEST: SPC has defined severe weather risks for the Great Plains Wednesday and Thursday, but the good news is that the upper trough and surface low responsible for this risk will mainly move up into Canada late this week, and there is no severe weather risk defined past Thursday.

FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: Moist air returns, and we could see a few showers or thunderstorms as early as Friday afternoon and Friday night. Then, over the weekend, we will deal with occasional showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. It won’t rain all weekend long, and severe weather is not expected. Just keep in mind there will be rain around at times if you are planning something outdoors. Highs over the weekend will be mostly in the low 80s, and the sky will be generally cloudy.

The chance of showers will continue into early next week as the moisture pool across the Deep South stays in place. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Sunny days and fair nights through Thursday from Panama City over to Gulf Shores; highs on the immediate coast will be in the 70s, with 80s likely just a few miles inland. Scattered showers and storms return Friday through Sunday, but there will be good breaks in the rain, and the sun will peek out at times. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning is 72 degrees.
