HEADED FOR SUMMER: Most all of Alabama is rain-free this afternoon despite a field of cumulus clouds across the state; we have noted one or two showers over East-Central Alabama, but those go away quickly this evening, and we have a pretty long dry spell ahead with a big warming trend.

An upper high will build right on top of us later in the week, setting the stage for the warmest weather so far this year. We rise into the mid 80s tomorrow, upper 80s Wednesday, and the latest GFS run is printing a high of 92 for Birmingham on Thursday afternoon. Each day will be mostly sunny and hazy.

FRIDAY AND THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: No reason to forecast any significant chance of rain with warm air aloft over the region. A weak back door front east of the state probably won’t have any real impact on our weather; we expect mostly sunny days and fair nights through Memorial Day with afternoon highs in the 87-90 degree range.

A few isolated showers could show up by the middle of next week, but it doesn’t look like a major rain event, and there is no sign of any severe weather threat through the end of May.

VOODOO LAND: Must be summer… the 12Z GFS is showing a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico on June 4… we all know that is in the land of voodoo, but it is a reminder the hurricane season begins on June 1. The first named storm this year in the Atlantic basin is “Arthur”.

AT THE BEACH: Doesn’t get much better… sunny days, fair nights from Panama City over to Gulf Shores through Memorial Day. Highs on the immediate coast between 77 and 80… 80s are likely just a few miles inland. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 77 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tonight at 8:30… you can watch it on “James Spann 24/7” on cable systems around the state, or on the web here.
