HEATING UP: The weather maps this morning are looking more and more like summer. An upper high will begin to build across the Deep South in coming days, which in turn pushes the primary storm track up into the northern U.S. This keeps the main producing systems well to the north of here, and also is responsible for rising heat levels. We project a high in the mid 80s today, upper 80s tomorrow, and around 90 degrees Thursday and Friday.

Days will be mostly sunny and hazy, nights will generally clear. The only potential issue is a “back door” type cold front Friday that might bring an isolated shower to the northeast corner of Alabama, but the risk seems so small now we won’t mention it in the forecast.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: We will stick with a dry forecast Saturday and Sunday; afternoon highs will remain in the 87 to 90 degree range, with lows in the 60s. Partly sunny days, fair nights.

The latest GFS hints the upper ridge will weaken a bit by Monday, and with a good increase in moisture I think it is wise to introduce the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Doesn’t mean it will be a “rainy day”, but a typical summer setup with a few spots seeing a passing afternoon shower.

That will be the situation into Tuesday and Wednesday of next week as well; see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

LONG RANGE: Sure looks like we can stick a fork in the spring tornado season for Alabama… no sign of any organized severe weather threat through the end of May.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Sunny days, fair nights through Sunday. Highs on the immediate coast in the 77 to 80 degree range… but inland highs between 87 and 90 later this week as summer like heat moves in. A few isolated showers and storms could show up on Memorial Day, but nothing really organized. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the upper 70s from Panama City over to Gulf Shores.
