Rain Moving Out; Cooler Air Moving In

EAST ALABAMA RAIN ENDING SOON: Rain is still falling over the eastern third of the state at daybreak this Christmas Eve; that will be all in Georgia soon. Our day will be mostly cloudy, breezy, and cooler with temperatures falling through the 50s. The sky becomes clear tonight.

CHRISTMAS DAY AND FRIDAY: Two very nice winter days. Sunshine back in full supply tomorrow with temperatures exactly at average values for December 25. We start the day in the 30s, and rise into the 50s by afternoon. Friday will stay dry with a high close to 60 degrees.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A cold front will get close to Alabama, and become nearly stationary as it becomes parallel to a developing southwest flow aloft. We will forecast a cloudy sky Saturday and Sunday with occasional showers both days. There could be a bit of thunder in a few spots, but this won’t be a severe weather problem. Highs over the weekend will be in the 50s; mostly between 55 and 59 degrees.

The latest GFS model data hints showers will linger into early next week on Monday as the front just won’t move very much.

NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAY: Much colder air invades Alabama by the middle of next week, and the disturbed southwest flow aloft continues. This could set the stage for winter weather mischief for parts of the Southern U.S… the 06Z GFS shows a surface low over Alabama Wednesday (December 31) with a cold rain for us, and a winter weather mess with snow and ice over parts of Tennessee and Arkansas.

No doubt this will change over the next seven days; just something to watch. Confidence is high in cold, Arctic air visiting Alabama… looks like our high will be only in the mid 30s on New Year’s Day Thursday. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

Tis the season… we will be on a holiday schedule through January 2 with just one Weather Xtreme video per day, and I will be taking some time off with my family through the middle of next week. Brian Peters will be handling the blog discussions and video production in my absence.

I hope you and your family enjoy God’s richest blessings this Christmas!
