Scattered Storms Later Today

| April 2, 2015 @ 6:37 am

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

EARLY THIS MORNING: Pretty quiet with nothing on radar at daybreak; temperatures are mostly in the 60s. Today will be warm and humid with a mix of sun and clouds; the high this afternoon will be pretty close to 80 degrees, which is about ten degrees above average for early April.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will form, and some of the stronger storms could produce small hail and gusty winds, but we don’t expect the kind of hail output we dealt with Tuesday. The chance of any one spot seeing a shower or thunderstorm today is about one in three, and the best chance will come after 10:00 a.m.

FRIDAY NIGHT FRONT: SPC now has an “enhanced” severe weather risk down into Northwest Alabama for tomorrow evening, with the standard “slight” risk into the central counties for tomorrow night.

An approaching cold front will bring an organized band of showers and storms down into the state tomorrow night; a few storms could form ahead of this during the mid to late afternoon over Northwest Alabama. Any discrete storms ahead of the main line could produce an isolated tornado, but the core risk will come from hail and strong straight line winds with the squall line tomorrow night.

The core threat will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight… model data hints the line will pass through places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden between 9:00 and midnight tomorrow night. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps and more details on the threat.

EASTER WEEKEND: Saturday will be sunny but much cooler with a high in the low to mid 60s… and by Sunday morning we project a low between 38 and 42 degrees for most places. Some scattered light frost is possible across the colder valleys and protected areas… a good chance this will be the last frost/freeze threat of the season. Sunday looks beautiful with a high around 70 along with a good supply of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK: Moisture returns Monday along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, and it looks like we will have some risk of storms on a daily basis through the week. But, for now, no signs of any big organized severe weather threat. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny weather continues along the coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores today and tomorrow with highs in the 70s. A few widely scattered showers are possible tomorrow night and Saturday morning, but otherwise the weekend looks fine with a good supply of sunshine both days. Saturday will be a bit cooler with a high in the 60s. Next week, about 7-9 hours of sunshine each day with only widely scattered showers.
