Warm, Calm May Weather

| May 5, 2015 @ 3:36 pm

WARM AND DRY: No real change in the Alabama weather situation for the rest of the week; an upper ridge will keep the rain producing systems well to the west and north of our state; we expect mostly sunny days and fair nights through Friday with only fair weather cumulus clouds during the heat of the day. Afternoon highs will be generally in the mid 80s tomorrow and Thursday, with upper 80s likely by Friday. These values are about five to ten degrees above average for early May in Alabama.

TO THE EAST: A sub-tropical storm is expected to develop in the Atlantic, just off the Southeast U.S. coast, in coming days. The high resolution NAM model shows the system southeast of Charleston Thursday evening, with the main wind field still a little offshore at that point.

The system will drift westward, toward the coast of the Carolinas, Friday, but the impact of this system will remain well to the east of Alabama. We should mention the name of the storm will be “Ana” if it develops as forecast.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Data from the GEFS ensemble hints that parts of Alabama will see 90 degree heat for the first time time year over the weekend…

The weather still looks dry with partly to mostly sunny days and fair nights. A few isolated showers or storms could show up near the Tennessee border Sunday afternoon, but even there the chance of any one spot getting wet looks rather small.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring the next decent chance of showers and storms by Tuesday, but for now it doesn’t look like a severe weather setup. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, fair nights will continue through the weekend on the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores; highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 70s, with 80s inland. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 75 degrees.
