Hot and Muggy With Isolated Afternoon Storms

| July 10, 2015 @ 6:20 am

MUST BE JULY IN ALABAMA: We are in that time of the year when our weather doesn’t change much, and we have some classic mid-summer conditions to deal with through next week.

An upper ridge of high pressure is over the Deep South, so the weather will stay hot, hazy, and humid through Sunday with a good supply of sunshine each day. And, each afternoon there is a good chance that showers and thunderstorms will develop… but they will be random, and very widely separated. Most of the storms will form between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in five each afternoon.

Afternoon highs will stay generally in the mid 90s… but a few spots over West Alabama could see upper 90s. Dew points will stay up in the 70s making the heat pretty uncomfortable.

NEXT WEEK: High pressure aloft might weaken ever so slightly by mid-week, but the overall idea remains the same. Hot, humid days with only widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms. The primary jet stream across North America will remain north of the heat bubble. Highs hold in the 90s, lows in the 70s.

AT THE BEACH: We are forecasting 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day along the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through much of next week, and of course, you will deal with the occasional passing thunderstorm. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the low to mid 80s.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet… all of the serious action remains over in the western Pacific. Typhoon Chan-Hom will move into the China coast this weekend with winds near 100 mph at the time of landfall. Looks impressive on visible satellite images this morning…
