Sun, Heat, A Few Storms

| July 10, 2015 @ 3:38 pm

CLASSIC SUMMER MIX: While a large part of Alabama is hot and dry with temperatures in the low to mid 90s, we have a handful of storms that have formed in the daytime heat across the central counties of the state. These storms are strong, and are producing very frequent lightning, heavy rain, and small hail. One of those storms formed on top of ABC 33/40 in Riverchase; we had dime sized hail for about 10 minutes.

The “pop up” storms will fade quickly this evening.

OUR WEEKEND: Not much change. Hot, hazy, humid weather continues tomorrow and Sunday with widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms… if you like the numbers game the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in five both afternoons, and most of the storms will come between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. Highs will be mostly in the mid 90s.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge won’t change much… perhaps a tad weaker later in the week when highs will slip a few degrees, and the coverage of afternoon storms could be a little higher. But, basically very typical July weather with partly sunny, hot, hazy days and the risk of “widely scattered, afternoon and evening thunderstorms”. Highs hold in the low to mid 90s on most days. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, and fair nights on the coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through next week with the usual risk of a passing storm from time to time. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. The picture below was taken at Pensacola Beach this morning… from @rolltideua

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is very quiet, and over in the western Pacific Typhoon Chan-hom is near the coast just below Shanghai… and is starting to recurve to the northeast.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
