Cold, Dry Weather For Alabama

| January 4, 2016 @ 6:08 am

FEELS LIKE WINTER: The El Nino blow torch has shot down for now, and we project cold, dry weather for Alabama as the work week begins. We project lows down in the mid 20s both tomorrow and Wednesday morning, and we won’t get out of the 40s today and tomorrow despite a good supply of sunshine.

LATER THIS WEEK: Dry weather continues Wednesday with a high in the low 50s, but clouds increase Thursday ahead of a weather system that will bring rain to the state Thursday night. At this point it looks like the greatest threat of rain will come from about 6:00 p.m. Thursday through 6:00 a.m. Friday. The air is nice and stable, so no severe weather, and probably no thunder. And, with limited moisture rain amounts should be mostly under 1/2 inch.

Clouds linger much of the day Thursday with a high in the mid 50s; then expect a mostly cloudy but pleasant day Friday with a high around 60 degrees.

THE WEEKEND: Clouds linger, and we will project more rain for the state Saturday night into Sunday as a surface low forms down in the Gulf of Mexico. Again this won’t be a severe weather issue for the state, and rain shouldn’t be too heavy, and there won’t be any flooding problems. The high Saturday will be at or just over 60 degrees, but Sunday should be noticeably colder with clouds, rain, and temperatures in the 40s much of the day.

MORE COLD AIR NEXT WEEK: A cold pattern is setting up for the eastern and northern U.S. next week; global models bring down what should be easily the coldest air so far this season by the middle of the week…

This has the potential to bring highs down into the 30s, and lows into the teens as far south as North Alabama by Wednesday or Thursday, but there is no way to be specific this far in advance. And, there is no evidence of any snow or winter weather problems for Alabama through the middle of next week. Take some time to see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday, Jacksonville State plays North Dakota State for the FCS National Championship Saturday in Frisco, Texas (north of Dallas; 11:00a CT kickoff). There will be cloudy periods during the game, and a passing shower is possible. About 48 degrees at kickoff, rising into the low 50s by the final whistle.

For Bama fans headed to Phoenix next week (Bama plays Clemson for the FBS National Championship Monday night January 11 at 7:30p CT)… for now the weather looks cool and dry; 50s during the day, falling into the 40s during the game.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
