A Few Showers Later Today

| February 16, 2016 @ 6:06 am

CLIPPER ON THE WAY: It is a cool, dry morning across Alabama with temperatures generally in the 40s. We will rise into the mid to upper 50s this afternoon; expect intervals of sunshine this morning, but clouds increase this afternoon ahead of an “Alberta Clipper” system coming down the back side of the long wave upper trough over the eastern third of the U.S. This will bring the chance of showers to North and Central Alabama from about 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; moisture will be limited, and rain amounts won’t be too heavy. And, a few spots won’t see enough rain to measure due to the scattered nature of the showers.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The weather will be rain-free with mostly sunny days and fair nights. The high tomorrow will be in the 54-57 degree range, then we reach the low to mid 60s Thursday, and by Friday some spots will approach 70 degrees. A very nice preview of spring.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A weak surface front will drift down into far North Alabama Saturday, and that will bring the risk of a few showers. But, there isn’t much dynamic support, so the rain won’t be too heavy or widespread, and the best chance of showers Saturday will be over the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama. And, the weather stays mild with a high in the 60s. Pretty much the same situation Sunday; maybe a little higher coverage of showers with more clouds than sun; the GFS is printing a high of 68 for Birmingham Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: A wave forms on the stalled front Monday, and rain should become widespread across much of Alabama. There could be some thunder, but severe weather should not be an issue. Then, our weather looks dry Tuesday through mid-week with highs dropping back in the 50s. Still no sign of any really cold, Arctic air through the end of February; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
