Very Nice Weekend Ahead
TODAY: Clouds linger across Alabama this morning with temperatures in the 40s; we project the sky to become partly sunny this afternoon, and temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 50s. The trough that brought the “meteorological bonanza” to Alabama yesterday is moving off the Atlantic coast.
THE WEEKEND: Sunshine in full force tomorrow and Sunday with highs in the 60s. Early morning lows will be mostly in the 37-41 degree range.
NEXT WEEK: It will be the warmest week so far this year with daily highs in the 70s; we might push 80 degrees on Tuesday (the GFS is printing a high of 79 for Birmingham). We stay dry Monday through Wednesday, but very active weather is likely west of the state with the dual threat of severe storms and flash flooding as a deep upper trough drops southward into Mexico.
How and when that trough lifts out to the northeast will determine our next chance of rain; for now it looks like we will have a decent risk of showers and storms by Friday (March 11)… a little too early to determine if there will be a severe weather threat involved. AT THE BEACH: Sunny days, fair nights through early next week from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores with highs in the 60s; the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a cool 60 degrees. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
STORM SPOTTER TRAINING: We are offering basic SKYWARN training at four locations across North/Central Alabama in March, followed by the big event, Storm Spotter Xtreme on Saturday, April 9 at the BJCC from 9am to 2pm. This will feature both the basic and advanced SKYWARN classes, along with a session from Kevin Laws of the Birmingham NWS office. And, if you come, you get free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show, going on at the BJCC that same day. There is no cost and no need to register. Just show up with a curious mind. Kids 10 and older will also enjoy this if they love weather and want to learn more. Please help us make the severe weather warning process better!
