RADAR CHECK: Alabama is rain-free this afternoon; the rain shield associated with Tropical Depression Nicole is well to the northeast, the sky has cleared temporary over the western counties of the state. Temperatures are hovering around 70 degrees in most locations. Clouds will increase tonight, and some rain will push into Northwest Alabama during the pre-dawn hours.
SHARPLY COLDER: A cold front is pushing through Alabama in dry fashion this morning, and it will be followed by the coldest air so far this season. Today will be mostly sunny with a cool northwest wind of 10-20 mph; the high will be in the 66-71 degree range over North Alabama, with mid 70s for the southern counties of the state.
MIXED SUN AND CLOUDS: For some, the sun is shining brightly this afternoon across Alabama, but some are under a persistent cloud cover. Most of the state is noticeably colder today… in fact some spots over the northern counties are barely out of the 30s. The cold front has stalled out around Troy; Dothan is still in the upper 70s at mid-afternoon.
CALMER DAY: A cold front is pushing through far South Alabama early this morning… it will bring colder air down into the state today with a clearing sky. Despite sunshine this afternoon… most places north of Birmingham won’t get out of the 40s. The average high for Birmingham on February 18 is 60.
COLD FRONT: Today will be a mostly cloudy day across Alabama as a cold front passes through the state. Once the front passes this afternoon, north winds of 12-22 mph will bring in some of the coldest air we have experienced so far this season. Temperatures won’t get out of the 40s this afternoon, and with a deep upper trough with very cold air aloft overhead a few snow flurries or snow showers are possible across Northeast Alabama, despite a dry airmass.
RADAR CHECK: Some light rain continues this afternoon over far South Alabama, in the broad zone from Mobile to Dothan. Clouds linger over the southern half of the state, but the sky has become mostly sunny over the northern counties of the state as dry air is pushing southward. Rain will end across South Alabama this evening… the sky will be mostly clear tonight with a low in the mid 20s.
TOMORROW: A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of North Alabama tomorrow… generally for areas north of a line from Millport to Cullman to Fort Payne. The advisory does not include Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, or Gadsden.
RADAR CHECK: Rain continues this afternoon generally south of a line from Wedowee to Marion to Butler; a few strong storms are in progress but there are no warnings in effect at mid-afternoon. SPC maintains a “slight risk” (level 2/5) for parts of Southwest Alabama, and a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) for the rest of South Alabama through the evening hours.
COLDER: Following a cold front that passed through Alabama late last night, we will experience noticeably colder air today. Temperatures won’t get out of the 40s over the northern third of the state despite a sunny sky. A north wind of 8-16 mph will make it feel colder. The wind will die down tonight, and with a clear sky we expect temperatures to fall into the 22-32 degree range early tomorrow morning.

ON THE MAPS: A cold front bisects Alabama this afternoon. North of the front, temperatures are only in the 40s and low 50s with a brisk north wind, but south of the front it is close to 80 degrees across the southeast counties of the state. A few rain showers continue in the colder air just north of the front at mid-afternoon… that rain will end soon and the sky will clear this evening.
RADAR CHECK: A band of showers has pushed into Northwest Alabama early this morning ahead of a cold front that will bring a significant weather change today. Look for occasional showers, and temperatures going the wrong way. We are starting the day around 60 degrees ahead of the cold front, but after it passes temperatures fall into the 40s with a chilly north wind.
SEVERE CLEAR: Dense fog this morning has given way to blue sky and sunshine this afternoon across Alabama with temperatures in the 60s, right at seasonal levels for mid-November in Alabama. A dry cold front will pass through the state tonight, and colder air rolls in after midnight. The sky will stay clear, and temperatures drop into the mid 30s early tomorrow. Colder spots north of Birmingham could see a light freeze.
COLDER: Clouds have moved into Alabama this morning, and we will have a little patchy light rain around today, tonight, and tomorrow morning as an upper trough passes through. Rain amounts will be very light, generally under one tenth of an inch… some places won’t get enough rain to measure. Temperatures will be noticeably colder today with a high between 47 and 52 degrees for the northern half of the state.
