RADAR CHECK: As advertised, we have your classic case of scattered, random showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. A few neighborhoods are getting heavy rain… the showers are moving slowly eastward. Temperatures are generally in the 86-91 degree range, and the showers will fade away tonight.
SUN, HEAT, STORMS: Hot, humid weather will continue across Alabama through the weekend, which is exactly what you expect in July. And, every day we will deal with “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. They have been few and far between over the past two days across North/Central Alabama, but they should increase in number today as moisture and instability values are expected to be higher. In fact, we have a few showers on radar early this morning over West Alabama.
RADAR CHECK: We have the usual array of random, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. With light winds aloft, they are moving very little, and most all of them will fade pretty quickly once the sun goes down later this evening.
CLASSIC SUMMER PATTERN CONTINUES THIS WEEK: This is a new day, but we have an old forecast to deliver. We start the day with a mostly sunny sky this morning, but during the afternoon and evening hours, random, scattered showers and thunderstorms will form in the moist, unstable airmass. Most of them will come from 1:00 until 9:00 p.m… and odds of any one spot getting wet are around 30 percent. The high will be in 89-92 degree range for most communities.
TIS THE SEASON: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through the weekend. Look for the typical summer weather… hot humid days with a mix of sun and clouds, and scattered, random showers and thunderstorms. Most of the storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, although a late night or morning shower sure can’t be ruled out. No way of knowing in advance when and where the storms fire up; you just have to keep a close eye on radar trends if you have something planned outside. Afternoon highs will be in the 88-92 degree range today through Sunday.

The main westerly winds aloft over North America are well to the north, but the daytime heating process makes the air over Alabama unstable, and once again we will deal with random, scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. SPC has introduced a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) for areas north and west of a line from Linden to Calera to Scottsboro.

RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers and strong thunderstorms are forming over Northeast Alabama this afternoon… mostly east of I-65, and north of I-20. Heavier storms are producing gusty winds and frequent lightning as they move eastward. SPC maintains a “slight risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for Northeast Alabama through the evening hours.
It is a humid Monday morning across Alabama, and radar shows another MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) north and west of our state over Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
DEEPER MOISTURE EAST OF I-65: We will mention a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, mainly for the eastern counties of Alabama, ahead of a cold front. SPC has East Alabama in a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe storms east of I-65…
RADAR CHECK: Most of the showers and storms across the northern half of Alabama are east of I-65 this afternoon… they are showing little movement, and will fade away once the sun goes down later this evening. Otherwise, we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures not as hot as recent days… generally between 85 and 90 degrees. The average high at Birmingham for September 21 is 84 degrees.
DRIER AFTER TODAY: We will maintain the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today as a moist, unstable airmass stays in place. Chance of any one location getting rain this afternoon will be in th 40 percent category… otherwise we expect a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the upper 80s.
MUGGY DAYS; SCATTERED STORMS: Moist, unstable air will continue to cover Alabama today, and this afternoon showers and storms should fire up in random, scattered places. Models have trended a little drier; odds of any one spot getting wet this afternoon are in the 30/40 percent range. The high will be between 87 and 90 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds.
MORNING SUN, AFTERNOON STORMS: The upper ridge over the southern U.S. will weaken a bit in coming days… this means a general increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. Chance of any one community seeing rain today is around 50 percent, and close to 60 percent tomorrow and Friday. Most of the storms will come from about 12:00 noon to 10:00 p.m. Otherwise, look for a mix of sun and clouds each day with a high between 88 and 91 degrees.
