RADAR CHECK: Scattered storms are most active over the southern half of Alabama this afternoon, but new ones are forming over the northern counties of the state as well. Away from the storms, the sky is partly sunny with temperatures in the 88-92 degree range for most communities. Storms fade tonight after sunset.
CLASSIC SUMMER WEATHER CONTINUES: Most of Alabama is dry early this morning… just a few showers southeast of Montgomery and over the eastern half of the Tennessee Valley just before daybreak. Expect a partly sunny sky today with developing showers and thunderstorms in random, scattered spots this an afternoon and early tonight.
RADAR CHECK: So far today, showers and thunderstorms are most active over the southern half of Alabama.
HUMID SUMMER WEATHER: We are in the time of the year when you will have a risk of afternoon and evening thunderstorms on a daily basis, and today is no exception. Look for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms later today, generally in the 2:00-9:00 p.m. time frame. And, like recent days, where storms do form they could be strong.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and strong to severe thunderstorms continue across the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama at mid-afternoon; a flash flood warning has been issued for parts of Lawrence, Morgan, and Madison counties where some spots have received over two inches of rain. Other scattered storms are developing over the rest of the state, and those are strong.
SUMMER MIX: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through the week as we are forecasting the usual mix of sun and scattered showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. We note a few storms on radar early this morning over North Alabama, but most of the activity will come later today during the afternoon and evening hours.
QUIET AFTERNOON: Most all of Alabama is rain-free this afternoon after a big MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) rolled through the southern counties this morning (and the Florida Panhandle as well). Temperatures are mostly in the 85-90 degree range. We do note showers and storms increasing over West Tennessee and North Mississippi; these will move into Northwest Alabama over the next few hours with potential for small hail and gusty winds.
EARLY MORNING RADAR UPDATE: While most of Alabama is rain-free early this morning, the exception is Baldwin County, where flash flood warnings remain in effect for the southern part of the county. Serious flooding is ongoing in the Pensacola area, where radar suggests some places have seen 10-15 inches of rain since yesterday afternoon… a flash flood emergency is in effect there (parts of Escambia County Florida).
RADAR CHECK: An organized mass of rain and storms continues to push through South Alabama this afternoon; multiple severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect from Atmore to Dothan as of 3p CT. To the north, scattered thunderstorms are increasing over the northern 2/3 of the state as well.
RADAR CHECK: We have a band of rain and strong, noisy thunderstorms across Central Alabama early this morning. Storms are producing torrential rain, some small hail, gusty winds, and very frequent lightning. Through the day today we project scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, and SPC has defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe storms south of a line from Linden to Fort Deposit to Eulfaula, and a “marginal risk” as far north as Fayette, Gardendale, and Heflin.
BUSY DAY: As expected, we have numerous severe thunderstorms in progress across the southern 2/3 of Alabama this afternoon. The stronger storms are producing large hail and damaging winds, and tornadoes touched down late this morning near Abbeville and Eufaula, in Southeast Alabama. A tornado watch remains in effect for areas south and east of Birmingham through 5:00; a new watch will likely be needed for some of the southern counties.
ACTIVE DAY: The weather pattern across Alabama today is more like spring. A band of strong winds aloft is undercutting an upper low over the eastern Great Lakes, and with good dynamic support we expect multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms through tonight. SPC has now defined a “moderate risk” (level 4/5) for parts of Central and South Alabama, including cities like Demopolis, Grove Hill, Selma, Monroeville, Montgomery, Greenville, Andalusia, Auburn, Troy, Eufaula, and Ozark. Lower level risks cover the rest of the state.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms persist across the southern half of Alabama this afternoon, and a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 7p CT for a number of South Alabama counties.
UNSETTLED PATTERN: Active weather is the story for Alabama through mid-week with multiple rounds of strong thunderstorms expected. Today SPC defines a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms for much of Central and South Alabama, with marginal risks (level 1/5) to the north and south.
