QUIET AFTERNOON: Most all of Alabama is rain-free this afternoon after a big MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) rolled through the southern counties this morning (and the Florida Panhandle as well). Temperatures are mostly in the 85-90 degree range. We do note showers and storms increasing over West Tennessee and North Mississippi; these will move into Northwest Alabama over the next few hours with potential for small hail and gusty winds.

Serious flooding is ongoing in the Pensacola area, where radar suggests some places have seen 10-15 inches of rain since yesterday afternoon… a flash flood emergency is in effect there (parts of Escambia County Florida).

RADAR CHECK: We have a band of rain and strong, noisy thunderstorms across Central Alabama early this morning. Storms are producing torrential rain, some small hail, gusty winds, and very frequent lightning. Through the day today we project scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, and SPC has defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe storms south of a line from Linden to Fort Deposit to Eulfaula, and a “marginal risk” as far north as Fayette, Gardendale, and Heflin.

BUSY DAY: As expected, we have numerous severe thunderstorms in progress across the southern 2/3 of Alabama this afternoon. The stronger storms are producing large hail and damaging winds, and tornadoes touched down late this morning near Abbeville and Eufaula, in Southeast Alabama. A tornado watch remains in effect for areas south and east of Birmingham through 5:00; a new watch will likely be needed for some of the southern counties.

ACTIVE DAY: The weather pattern across Alabama today is more like spring. A band of strong winds aloft is undercutting an upper low over the eastern Great Lakes, and with good dynamic support we expect multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms through tonight. SPC has now defined a “moderate risk” (level 4/5) for parts of Central and South Alabama, including cities like Demopolis, Grove Hill, Selma, Monroeville, Montgomery, Greenville, Andalusia, Auburn, Troy, Eufaula, and Ozark. Lower level risks cover the rest of the state.
