What a name! A strange name. Rivals Clines Corners, New Mexico and Deadhorse, Alaska. Even Pie Town, New Mexico.

But there really is a place named Scrougeout because one of the ABC 33/40 Skywatchers lives there and he is very dependable and truthful. Regardless, Scrougeout shows clearly in my DeLorne Alabama topo map atlas. It is located a few miles from where Etowah, Cherokee and Dekalb County join.

Scrougeout is right in the middle of Lookout Mountain, on Lookout Mountain Parkway, yet in sort of a depression or small valley. Translation: Some very cold nights in winter under clear skies and light wind.

Vic Bell is the 33/40 Skywatcher there. He tells us, from what he has heard, that Scrougeout was named after the only two stores there kept undercutting each others prices until they ran each out of town.

Rain has been the big wet story in Scrougeout lately. Check these stats from Vic this morning:

* 11.13 inches so far in May
* 37.65 so far in 2009
* 77.58 in a 365 day period, May 26, 2008 to May 25, 2009 (yesterday) (a year and a half worth of rain!)

Vic believes his great interest in weather began when he was a small child in Arkansas and a tornado lifted righ over their house.

No way we could do without our army of 33/40 Skywatchers.
