THE DAY AFTER: The remnant low that was Tropical Storm Lee stirred up a big fuss across our state yesterday and last night, but the weather is much calmer this morning. A few morning notes…

From the Alabama Power Twitter feed: 5:30am Update: statewide, 187K without power. 169K in metro Birmingham, 13K to the east, 4K to the west. I am producing the weather products for the Internet and radio this morning with no power at my place in North Shelby County.

Jefferson County, Birmingham City, and Briarwood Christian Schools are closed today. Hoover City and Trussville Schools are running on a two hour delay. Please watch ABC 33/40’s Good Morning Alabama, or check the web site for more on school information.

TODAY: We will have a hard time reaching the mid 60s today with lingering clouds, light rain, and drizzle as a deep upper trough remains over Alabama and the Deep South. Keep in mind we should be in the upper 80s this time of the year. It will be breezy at times, but nothing like last night.

REST OF THE WEEK: We expect partly to mostly sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through Friday, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Very refreshing weather after the long hot summer. An upper low to the north could kick off a shower or two near the Tennessee border Friday, but we don’t expect any significant chance of rain down this way.

WEEKEND PEEK: Highs creep back into the low to mid 80s, and it looks most of Alabama will be dry, with the exception of a few widely scattered showers over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama. The days will be partly sunny.

TROPICS: Hurricane Katia in the Atlantic, packing winds of 125 mph, will recurve into the open Atlantic over the next five days, passing between the East Coast of the U.S. and Bermuda. A strong wave in the East Atlantic should become Tropical Storm Maria in coming days, but longer range model data shows this to be a recurving storm as well, taking a path similar to Katia. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details and all of the graphics.
