RADAR CHECK: We have some rain on radar early this morning; at daybreak showers are near Gadsden and Tuscaloosa… moving east.

The overall situation hasn’t changed much today; moist, unstable air means a mix of sun and clouds with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three, and the high should be in the low 90s this afternoon.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Warmer air aloft and a stronger ridge means showers and storms become fewer in number on these two days. Days will be partly to mostly sunny, nights mostly fair. And, while afternoon storms are certainly possible, most places will be dry since they will be very isolated. Temperatures rise up into the mid 90s.

THE WEEKEND: Another weakness in the ridge develops, and scattered showers and storms should become more numerous. This doesn’t mean a “rainy weekend”, but we have a decent chance of getting badly needed showers and storms from time to time. The chance of your lawn getting rain both days will be in the 40-50 percent range, and afternoon highs will be at or just over 90 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds.

NEXT WEEK: We will roll with the standard mid-summer forecast through the week; partly sunny, hot, humid days with the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Highs will be in the 91-94 degree range both days.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet, but we have a super typhoon over in the western Pacific. “Nepartak” will approach Taiwan later this week, but it should be weaker by then.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 8 to 10 hours of sunshine daily on the coast from Gulf Shores over to Panama City Beach through the weekend with only isolated thunderstorms. Highs on the immediate coast will be stay between 87 and 90 degrees, with low to mid 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
