RADAR CHECK: Most of the really active storms this afternoon are over the southern half of Alabama…
Some of the storms over South Alabama have reached severe limits with gusty winds and hail. But, for now, the northern half of the state is pretty quiet. Temperatures are generally in the low 90s.
TO THE NORTH: Strong storms are near I-40 in Tennessee, and some of those could drift downward into far North Alabama early tonight. SPC has introduced the standard “slight risk” of severe storms for the Tennessee Valley tonight; storms there could produce strong gusty winds and hail.
Accordingly we will need to hang on to some risk of showers and storms over North Alabama tonight.
TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Showers and storms will become fewer in number on these days as warmer air aloft moves in; temperatures reach the mid 90s with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Afternoon storms are possible, but they will be very isolated, and most communities will be dry.
THE WEEKEND: Another weakness in the upper ridge develops, and scattered showers and storms should increase Saturday and Sunday. That doesn’t mean a “rainy weekend”, but there is a pretty decent chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs will be close to 90 with a mix of sun and clouds both days.
NEXT WEEK: No reason to depart now from the routine summer weather forecast. Partly sunny days, and the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Highs in the low to mid 90s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet; tropical storm formation is not expected this week.
AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, fair nights on the coast from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores through the weekend with only isolated thunderstorms. Highs 87-90 on the immediate coast, with mid 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
