Scattered Summer Storms

| August 5, 2016 @ 5:43 pm

RADAR CHECK: We have the classic case of random, scattered storms on a summer afternoon today. Storms that have formed are producing torrential rain, lots of lightning, and gusty winds, but many other communities are just hot and dry…

Temperatures are generally in the low to mid 90s, and the storms will end later tonight after the sun goes down.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Not much change tomorrow and Sunday; we project a mix of sun and clouds both days with scattered showers and storms, slowly increasing in coverage as the upper ridge weakens a bit. While the best chance of showers and storms will come from 2:00 until 9:00 p.m… we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower. Highs will be generally in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Global models suggest a broad surface low will form across Alabama and Georgia, drifting slowly southward toward the northeast Gulf of Mexico. This should bring a trend toward more numerous showers and storms, and lower heat levels with highs generally in the upper 80s. Keep in mind parts of Alabama are still in drought conditions, so hopefully this pattern will bring some beneficial summer rain.

TROPICS: We will keep an eye on the broad low next week, that could reach the northeast Gulf, but the impact will be the same whether this becomes a tropical cyclone or not… lots of rain.

AT THE BEACH: About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with a few passing showers and storms; showers/storms become more likely next week as the surface low approaches. Highs will be generally in the upper 80s on the immediate coast, with low 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
