Temperature Has Fallen from 70F to 56F in 14 minutes in Tuscaloosa

| December 18, 2016 @ 4:04 am

Our strong cold front just passed Tuscaloosa right now where it has fallen from 70F at 3:42 to 60F at 3:49 a.m. to 56F at 3:56 a.m. Heavy rain was falling. Winds gusted to 30 mph.

At Columbus MS, the temperature fell like this:
…73F at 1:26
…68F at 1:31
…54F at 1:39
…48F at 1:44
…43F at 1:58
…40F at 2:58
and currently is 39.

Winds gusted to 31 mph officially there, but there was wind damage in and around Columbus MS from the winds as the cold front passed through.

It is now 48F at Jasper and 43F at Cullman.

The temperature at 2:30 a.m. was 39F at Haleyville while it was 73F at Jasper.

The thunderstorms have weakened substantially over the past hour or so. No warnings right now and don’t really expect any additional ones. Lightning rates have waned dramatically. I would expect the severe thunderstorm watch that remains in effect for Cullman, Blount, Marshall, Jackson and DeKalb Counties will be cancelled soon.

There is still lightning over Central MS, but it is waning also. Lightning continues down around Vicksburg MS where the stronger storms are now.

The good news is the front is slowing and the rain should continue for the better part of the day across Central Alabama counties, ending around noon in Hamilton and not until late afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Gadsden and not completely in Anniston after after 8 p.m. Rainfall amounts will be moderate, around one half to one inch.

Greenwood MS has picked up 1.01 inches of rain so far.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for extreme North Alabama, including Lauderdale, Colbert, Limestone, Madison and Jackson Counties, where light ice accumulations may occur with freeing rain and sleet. Accumulations will be less than one tenth of an inch with a trace of sleet. Similar advisories are in effect for western and Middle Tenenssee and extreme northern Mississippi. They extend all the way into the Great Lakes.

Freezing rain is now falling at some sites in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties where the temperature has fallen to 32F.
