NHC Will Initiate Advisories at 10 a.m. on Tropical Storm Irma

| August 30, 2017 @ 9:19 am

Late note at 10:09, the official NHC track picks up on the idea of the European that the Bermuda High will strengthen and push Irma west southwestward toward the northern Leewards, including the Virgin Islands and Greater Antilles (Puerto Rico) in about seven days.

It would be a major hurricane at that point.

This more southerly track could impact the Bahamas and Southeast Coast including South Florida, Georgia or the Carolinas.

The system in the far eastern Atlantic near the Cape Verde Islands has become better organized overnight and this morning and the NHC will classify it as Tropical Storm Irma at 10 a.m. CDT.

Here is an infrared satellite image of the Atlantic. You can see the soon to be Irma in the far right bottom corner of the image.

The general consensus is that it will track north of the islands of the Antilles as you can see from this spaghetti plot of the models.

Of course, we will have to monitor to make sure it doesn’t sneak back toward the Bahamas and South Florida. We will have lots of time to watch it.
