First Recon Fix From Kermit

| September 9, 2017 @ 2:05 pm

The NOAA WP-3D Orion that is nicknamed Kermit, for Kermit the Frog, is flying in Hurricane Irma now. It has found a much weaker hurricane in terms of winds, but the central pressure is already starting to drop.

Maximum surface winds were 94 mph. Maximum flight levels winds were 113 mph. The pressure is 939 mb, down two millibars from the last fix.

Here is a cool image of the flight path with the onboard radar from the plane.

Irma has concentric eyewalls, 15 and 30 miles in diameter. It appears to be developing a new inner eyewall according to microwave imagery from CIMMS.
