No Change in Thinking at 10 p.m.: Light Wintry Mix Overnight in Some North Central Alabama Spots

| December 26, 2017 @ 10:06 pm

The NWS in Birmingham is choosing not to issue any advisories at this time for the wintry mix that may affect northern parts of the area overnight.

No real change in the thinking. Rain is now pushing across much of western Alabama. Temperatures are falling about 3 degrees with evaporative cooling at the onset of the precipitation.

As readings fall into the 30s after midnight, the rain may mix with sleet and eventually with freezing rain in spots that manage to reach 30F overnight.

There could be a few slick spots on bridges and overpasses in the coldest areas in the morning.

…LIGHT WINTRY MIX POSSIBLE THROUGH 9 AM…

A light mixture of rain, freezing rain, and ice pellets are
possible after midnight. This light wintry mix will remain
in the forecast through around 9 am.

There will be a large variability in surface temperatures across
north central Alabama overnight. Some places may briefly dip to
near 30 degrees, while others will remain above freezing the
entire time. Additionally, precipitation will not even reach the
ground at all locations, but some will receive light amounts.
As a result, there may be a few slick spots on elevated surfaces
in the morning. These conditions will not be widespread and an
upgrade to an advisory is not anticipated at this time. Light rain
should be the dominant precipitation type.
