Things Changing in the Birmingham Metro Area Just After 3 p.m.

| January 16, 2018 @ 3:19 pm

A band of moderate to heavy snow is pushing into the Birmingham Metro area at this hour. Temperatures are below freezing and there and we fear that problems will be starting very soon. Accidents may begin to happen soon.

Roads are becoming wet in the Birmingham Metro, and with readings in the upper 20s, roads will begin to ice over.

There is a significant traffic accident on US-280 at Rosedale with an overturned tractor-trailer truck. We are not sure it is because of ice, but that is definite possibilities.

The band of snow affecting the Birmingham area extends from St. Clair County through the Birmingham Metro into southern Tuscaloosa, northern Bibb, as well as Greene and Hale Counties.

Ahead of that, light snow extends from southern St. Clair County through Calhoun and Cherokee Counties.

Behind the first band, light snow covers a wide part of West and Northwest Alabama. There is moderate snow falling across parts of Pickens, northwestern Tuscaloosa, Fayette and southern Lamar Counties.

Up to an inch of snow is expected to fall across the area over the next few hours. Snow will work its way into Montgomery and South Central Alabama this evening. Snow could even fall in places like Mobile and Dothan before morning.

We hope that you are in your designated place for tonight at this point in areas where snow is falling.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the entire state of Alabama.

A wind chill advisory also covers the entire state. For Central Alabama, it will be in effect from 9 a.m. CST to 9 a.m. CST tomorrow morning. Winds chill values below zero will be possible tonight and early Wednesday morning.

A hard freeze warning is in effect for tonight and tomorrow night. Temperatures will be in the single digits over North Central Alabama, from 11-13F in the I-20 Corridor and in the middle teens over South Central Alabama.
