Strong Storms Affecting Portions of Greene, Pickens, & Sumter

| January 22, 2018 @ 10:38 am

At 10:31 AM CST, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Electric Mills, or 17 miles northeast of Meridian Station, moving east at 35 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.

Therefore, a Significant Weather Advisory is in effect for Southern Pickens, Greene, and Northwestern Sumter counties until 11:30 AM.

Locations impacted include…
Eutaw, Aliceville, Gordo, Carrollton, Pickensville, Boligee, Union, Gainesville, Epes, Emelle, McMullen, Panola, Walden Quarters, West Greene, Benevola, Johnston Lake, Bevill Lock And Dam, Garden, New West Greene and Mantua.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

We’ll need to keep our eyes on the tornado-warned storm in Kemper and Noxubee counties in eastern Mississippi, as this could possibly move into Southern Pickens and Northern Sumter counties within the next few minutes.
